Armed only with an acoustic guitar, a trilby and a captivating personality, ex-Million Dead frontman Frank Turner successfully wins over a small army of Biffy Clyro early-comers.
In contrast to the main draw, who unleash fury upon fury, Turner's amiable chat and raw emotion in songs such as 'Worse Things Happen At Sea' (a song about "how much I fucking hate my ex") quickly endears him to the audience. That they can relate to his subject matter also helps; his set contains two consecutive songs about house parties - 'Couldn't Care Less About Your Gap Year' and 'The Real Damage'.
Clearly he is no philosopher – with titles like 'Thatcher Fucked The Kids', a balanced critique of free market economics is unlikely to be forthcoming - but Turner injects enough humour into his lyrics to prevent his foray into well-trodden ground veering into tedium. Indeed, it is a measure of the man's charisma that he manages to succeed where so many 'man and a guitar' acts have failed, and hold the attention for an entire set.
Ironically, five-man yourcodenameis:milo achieve the opposite: besides a couple of selections from recent second album 'It Came From The Sun', the Geordies exude energy but lack the tunes to back it up. Maybe they should take lessons from Biffy Clyro – despite their lack of numbers, they maintain intensity from start to finish, powering through a breathless hour that demonstrates why they are finally making a mainstream breakthrough.
