Venue Manchester Night & Day
Rating: 9/10
The Night & Day, a somewhat iconic music venue in Manchester and a second home for the true over 18 music fan, has tonight opened their doors to a gaggle of teenagers, recognising that music should never just be for thirtysomething beard strokers.
Triumphantly, youth is a theme that runs throughout the evening. Jakobinarina, the fresh faced and unfazed Icelandic support grace the stage with a blinding set, including a slew of tracks that certainly have the potential to become cult classics.
It's an exciting time for headliners Cajun Dance Party, this being the second night of their first ever headline tour and their enthusiasm is laid out for everyone to see. Their attitude to live performances is clearly a healthy one: a permanent grin plastered on every member, thoroughly enjoying the adrenalin rush of pleasing people with your own accomplishments.
Sadly, charisma is a trait rarely found in today’s charts and its importance is lost on kids who only want to see their music press darlings perform in an emotionless arena. That’s why CDP are such a refreshing band - with a front man that oozes passion and a clear desperation to be near the crowd at all times (this usually involves darting through the venue, bumping shoulders with overexcited fans).
On record their distinctive sound is comprised of idyllic and soothing vocals, which harshly contrast with spangly guitars and the odd cowbell. Impressively however, on stage these songs are transformed and evolve onto another level. They certainly aren't impressive instrumentalists, but together create a sound and atmosphere that's rarely seen in such an embryonic band. Forthcoming single 'Amylase' is a song that stands out in the set, a burst of biological fun with the odd chanting chorus thrown in for good measure.
Their set, although short, was an exceptional insight into this bands potential and although it may hard to avoid comparisons with the likes of the late Larrikin Love, their quirky and rural style has effectively produced an exceptional show for a band who've only managed to record a handful of tracks.
