Often paralleled to Justice (even if only for 'We Are Your Friends'), SMD are the utter epitomise of electro at its finest. By-passing the genre of “New Rave” from the moment they stepped on stage to the moment they left their set never dipped but instead kept the crowd riding on a wave of sound.
It doesn’t matter that they’re only two men with only a synth and assorted beeps, drums and vocals for company. With their heavily stylised electro in one hand and the audience in the other they managed to hold the attention of not only the hardcore ‘ravers’ in the middle but the people on the fringes. And who needs banter with the crowd when you’ve got a continuous beat making sure at least one body part is moving at all times? Creating a sphere of music which captured the audience in its bubble they paused only to step to the front and bow before exiting.
Knowing exactly how to gather everyone up in the music with its dips and dives their set doesn’t wane but instead gets steadily better. An example then of a duo in it for the music? Not riding on the new rave wave but instead creating dirty electro for the sake of it. Playing only four or five songs in all but with musical interludes of beeps and siren-esque noises and that driving beat they get through 'Hustler', 'It’s the Beat' (vocals from Go Team!s lead singer) and 'Simple'. 'It’s the Beat' has literally nearly the whole crowd vying for a little bit of space in which to dance in whilst simultaneously straining to see how they actually create those delicious sounds. 'Hustler' has all the ingredients of an epic dance song and although towards the end of the set the crowd doesn’t waver in their dancing.
All in all then a superb support act possibly putting the Klaxons to shame a little. For Simian (as they say themselves) it really is about the beat.
