The Teenagers - Love No

Rating: 8/10
The Teenagers have a different and quirky vibe about them. New single ‘Love No’ is crafted with candid lyrics, full of everything you say in real life, but wouldn’t dream of hearing on a record.
Opening with intense and effective guitar chords and sharp drum beats throughout, along with the distinctive part spoken, part sung delivery of Parisian lead singer Quentin Delafron. The lyrics are delivered mostly in a mocking faux female voice, the sort than an annoyed boyfriend would impersonate whilst recounting the latest berating hes received to his drinking buddies.
The litany of complaints in the lyrics is incredibly humorous, including an inordinate amount of computer time, compulsively watching showgirls, and treating pepperoni pizza as a vital food group. Building up in the chorus, there is denial that he even loves, or likes the girl that much, stating "I’m not in love with you, but its ok to stay with you".
However by the end of the track the stubborn chorus cleverly morphs from ‘I’m not in love with you’ to ‘I’m not in love, are you?’ questioning the girls intentions, and showing a hint of insecurity on the brunt of all the adolescent anger in the lyrics. Whilst it may not be the most sympathetic stance, it is definitely a shade or two of grey lighter than the harsh mockery at the beginning.
‘Love No’ is an intriguing record, whilst remaining amusing, and the shift in the song at the end is simply wonderful.
