Quirky and uplifting; the bright future of alternative music is here.
To sum up, there's no dead space on this album. It's a non-stop burst of energy from start to finish, with punchy but playful guitar and an almost punk feel about it. The lyrics sound like they've been scribbled down in a state of uncontrollable excitement. Similar to that of CSS's Lovefoxxx. Obscure, maybe, but no other lyrics would be right with this music ("send me stationary to make me horny"). You get the idea.
'Bookish punk', if there is such a thing. The singer screams out with such fierceness and urgency, that's the only way to describe it. Of course, it's the song subjects (geography, maths, etc) that give it a nerdy quality. Which is nicely refreshing for this kind of band. Students who aren't popping pills will love it.
Layered with different instruments, the overall sound has something new at every turn. The pace tells you it has some kind of purpose, like they're in a rush to tell you their whole message in 43 minutes. Very true, as it's a very important debut album. Their debut EP was a taster, which left many Arcade Fire fans hungry for the main course. This doesn't disappoint. It may even be too filling, as the velocity rarely wavers.
Overall, Los Capesinos! is proof that alternative music doesn't have to be pretentious lyrics sung by dull, gloomy musicians. Even Win Butler can crack a smile.
