‘Free Will’ introduces a new, strange sound. Funk fused with a subtle disco beat combining well with fragile vocals from Antony Hegarty, singer of Antony And The Johnsons. It is an irresistible alien sound of electro-funk. ‘Hercules’ Theme’ combines brass, strings and romantic vocals into an opus of classical electronica. Hercules And Love Affair are no ordinary band. Coming from New York City with eclectic tastes and influences, they are taking the disco scene by storm.

The brainchild of Andy Butler, Hercules And Love Affair really came into place after Hegarty’s Mercury Prize triumph although it had been in the pipeline for several years already. ‘Blind’, easily the highlight of the album, delights with Hegarty’s sensuous lyrics paired with an up-tempo electro beat. It is strange but it works brilliantly. It adds a depth and complexity and its driving pulse generates a fresh energy, different from any of Hercules And Love Affair’s contemporaries.

Andy Butler’s devotion to the Classics adds a new face to this original, futuristic sound. ‘Easy’ stands out in this classic album with Hegarty departing from the familiar falsetto, and dropping many octaves to a growl mixing surprisingly well with tribal drumming. Another highlight is the upbeat synthpop of ‘Raise Me Up’, which creates a beautiful fusion of emotional vocals, snappy brass and a strong drumbeat.

Hercules And Love Affair have a vision, a unique sound and are exploring it with fantastic results.
