Model Horror will be releasing their first ever single 'We Are Here' physically on March 17th. Rob Hardy (guitar / vox) dropped by to tell us about it.
Hello Rob! Here at Neu! we love your new single 'We Are Here', will you be doing anything to celebrate its release?
We have a local show planned for the release which is bound to kick off into a drunken parade of sorts around the town centre. Other than that we haven’t really thought about celebrating. Might get some tattoos?
Radio DJs seem to love you too - what do you think it is about the band that encourages such support?
I guess you would need to ask them that question. Hopefully, it’s the same sense of excitement and energy we feel when we are playing and writing these sounds. It’s a buzz for us having the people who can champion new music, taking the time to play our songs.
We would like to think they recognise our DIY ethic and this is something we have in common.
You've been receiving a fair bit of press in the lead up to the single, what's the strangest thing you've seen written about yourselves?
We haven’t had anything too extreme written about us yet but it’s always strange when your compared, sometimes in a better light, to bands that inspired you to get into music in the first place.
Where is 'Here'?
‘Here’ is a lyrical equivalent of that life-jacket-whistle, that they show you how to use on aeroplanes, amid an ocean of other songs.
Of all the live dates you've played recently, which has been your favourite? What's the best part of being on the road?
Recently we played in Brighton with Crystal Castles and headlined at 93 Feet East in London, both shows rating highly so far. We all have a soft spot for sampling the Chinese takeaway where ever we go and on rare occasions that sometimes out ranks the gig itself.
We hear you've got Model Horror boxers - do you all wear them?
We do indeed. They came about when we were too busy/skint to get some proper merchandise sorted out so we ended up heading over to our local supermarket, bought a shed load of boxers, covered them in iron-on designs and threw them out at gigs. We tend not to take them on the road with us anymore but we do own a few pairs and they are exceptionally comfortable.
Have you started work on your debut album yet? Do you have an idea of how you want it to sound?
No, to be honest we don’t really think about our songwriting in terms of working towards and album... We have ideas and we play! We are currently getting some more demos churned out and then we will sit back and see what we have to work with. Until then, who’s to know?
If you weren't in a band, what would you be doing with yourself?
This is purely based on snippets of conversation I’ve managed to catch but if we weren’t in a band Ian would be travelling, Sim would own the coffee shop he works at, Craig would be on ITV’s World Poker Challenge, Jonny wouldn’t be failing his university exams and I’d be really bored.
If Model Horror could follow in the footsteps of another band, which would you hope it to be?
Ideally we would like to stumble through the music industry without following anyone but creating our own. Failing that, Queen.
Where do you think you'll be in five years time?
By then we plan to have secured our role as UN ambassadors!... If not, then Tokyo looks like a cool place, we could have a lot of fun there!
