Mystery Jets - Twenty One

Mystery Jets
Release Date: 24/03/08
Label: Warner
Rating: 8/10
When the Mystery Jets first got recognition a couple of years back, they sadly failed to hit the mainstream. They're now back with an album celebrating all things youthful (hence the title), whilst still managing to show their progression from debut 'Making Dens'.
Following first track 'Hideaway' (which opens with air raid sirens and a stupidly catchy synth/bass riff) is the first single from 'Twenty One', 'Young Love'. "If I only knew your name I'd go from door to door," Blaine Harrison sings sweetly. Borrowing vocals from up and coming London folk singer Laura Marling, the track is just one of an album of stunners.
The Mystery Jets have separated themselves from many of their peers by producing an album that is consistent, and intelligent without being overly pretentious and unlistenable. Tracks like 'Two Doors Down' echo the sound of 80s synth pop songs (inspired by Phil Collins), and manage to be fun but not cheesy.
'Twenty One' has pretty much abandoned the band's Pink Floyd influence prog-rock sound of 'Making Dens', for a more listener-friendly album of pop songs, and done it well.
