The Whip have just released their brilliant new album 'X Marks Destination', and lucky for us Bruce had time for a chat about it.
There seems to be many exciting, new bands coming out of Manchester, is it having a musical revival as such?
Yeah it’s a good time for Manchester. The cool thing is there are a lot of bands doing stuff but it’s all coming from different sorts of musical backgrounds. I guess a lot of bands have come from Manchester in the past so it’s good to get some fresh meat cooking on the musical griddle.
How happy are you with your album, 'X Marks Destination'?
We’re really happy to get it out of there, we’ve been gigging for a couple of years so to be honest found it hard to find the time to finish it. I think it shows the journey we’ve been on over that time, a band on the road playing in bars and clubs picking up ideas on the way.
What do you think of New Rave?
I still don’t think anyone really knows what it means musically, I don’t think we’re new rave whatever it is? I don’t know who is? We like making music that makes people want to move their feet.
What do you hope to have achieved by this time next year?
We want to get the next album out this time next year, I wrote some of these songs 2 years ago so it was good to put it all to bed on this album and I’m really looking forward, after a few remixes we’re doing at the moment to get on recording stuff with danny back in my spare room or on the road anywhere we can. We did bits of this one on trains, in a disabled toilet in a church, in dressing rooms, wherever we could.
What are you more excited about, your album or the tour?
It’s good to get the album out and get playing gigs where people know more songs than just the singles, people now know when the drops and builds are coming. Audiences have been wicked this week since the albums been out.
Who did you prefer supporting, Simian Mobile Disco or Hadouken!?
They were both amazing tours and the audiences were different. The h! tour was crazy, we we’e pelted with glowsticks, in a positive appreciative way! From my eyes it looked like starwars with loads of sticks hurtling pase me, we left unhurt but James from Hadouken got a black eye from the big glowsticks, they are the ones to duck from. The Simian tour was great, it was nice to spend time with the guys, Jas from Simian started our album with us and they got too busy so it was nice to catch up and have a laugh.
Who would you most like to remix one of your songs?
Maybe Daft Punk, they don’t do too many remixes, we’ve met lots of people we’ve respected musically but they still have a mystique and it would be great to play or do some stuff with them.
Who has influenced your music and how?
Club culture from the last few years really, we love going out to clubs or dancing after we’ve played in clubs ,it’s the best environment to hear new sounds and fresh stuff.
