Of all the bands producing experimental, 8-bit, electro sounds to put on MySpace, Crystal Castles were always going to be the ones to look out for. Shrouded in mystery and intrigue (and with a song apparently created by mistake) they've captured the interest of entire music press. They've even got an appearance on Skins out of it.

With a wide array of demo songs that people seemed to adore (even though many were rough, unfinished and untitled) they waited eagerly for the debut album. So much, that it was leaked before release. Which isn't a surprise, unlike the album itself.

All of the familiar songs are there, as well as some shadowy, captivating new material. 'Courtship Dating' stays with you, thanks to the harrowing screaming and the rising and falling synthesizer. 'Knights' provides a more haunting and aggressive feel after 'Vanished' makes things uplifting and fresh. It's a fantastic mess of moods and sounds.

Just you get tired of the processed beats and the attacking noises in your head, the finale is as shocking as it is a relief. 'Tell Me What To Swallow' changes direction when you think you you've understood what Crystal Castles are about. Before this album, the thought of an acoustic guitar associated with this band would disturb and confuse you.

Rather than that, your mind will revel in the thought of what this duo will come up with next.
