In the beginning, there was The White Stripes. Sometime after they began to get recognition, Jack White formed a side project - The Raconteurs. 'Consolers Of The Lonely' is the second product of this band.
Jack White's influence is very obvious, but the band have created an album full of well thought out, intelligent rock songs with definite blues and country influences on it. Consistent, but not repetitive, 'Consolers Of The Lonely' is just that little more grown up than any of the White Stripes albums, and takes advantage of a full band (and a drummer who isn't Meg White).
The album ranges from simple rock songs like 'Salute Your Solution', to the country influenced 'Top Yourself' and 'The Switch And The Spur' - both of which could easily belong in Spaghetti Westerns. In fact, the entire album could easily make an excellent soundtrack to a film, maybe at the expense of a few more 'catchy' songs (note, that is no bad thing, in a world of horribly catchy but substance lacking one hit wonders).
If you liked The White Stripes, but only 'cause of their catchy hooks and mainstream coverage, chances are this isn't for you. Whether you like The White Stripes or not, but think that real, slightly different music is a godsend in this time of mediocre, pop guitar bands cashing in on the public's tendency to be sheep, then 'Consolers Of The Lonely' might be just up your street.
