The Maple State are gifted. That is without a doubt. With 'For The Temperate Lives', The Maple State have got an epic, uplifting song on their hands. Vocalist Gregory Counsell does a superb job with this whilst, conveying a sense of solitude, he brings together the band in a rousing chorus. Gregory Counsell's lyrics show his love for classical literature whilst drawing from personal experiences. “I’m not so f***ing chipper” references Jack Kerouac but still keeps an air of originality.
As well as literature, The Maple State are influenced by much from America. In fact, 'For The Temperate Lives' sounds like it hails from America. Despite this, The Maple State have found a formula that works. The chorus is instantly memorable. It is understandable why this is a crowd favourite in live shows. Even in the calm first minute, the subtle vocals and guitar engages the listener making it very hard for the listener not to be impressed.
The Maple State are a promising, new band from Manchester. They do not deserve to be filed away under a title ‘Mancunian Bands’. They have shown, with 'For The Temperate Lives', that they are a thoroughly unique band.
