Rating: 7/10
Opening track, ‘Centennial’ shows the continuation of the great talent displayed in their 2007 EP ‘A Lesson In Crime’. It shows how the band have matured yet still maintained such a fresh sound. With dreamy melodies contrasting well with spiky post-punk guitars, Tokyo Police Club seem to have found the perfect balance of the two. Recent single ‘In A Cave’ is without a doubt a highlight of the album. Resonant guitars and instantly memorable lyrics make this feel strangely triumphant. This resonance and soaring guitars continues into ‘Graves’, which is a particularly beautiful song. If only it was longer.
‘Juno’ highlights Tokyo Police Club’s edge and ability to produce simple yet great songs. However, ‘Tessellate’ is slightly disappointing – it fails to develop with the fantastic glimmering arpeggios which are very promising indeed. The strings-led ‘The Harrowing Adventures Of?’ shows a mellow side to Tokyo Police Club. The song ambles along beautifully to lead in to the upbeat and soaring choruses of ‘Nursery, Academy’. The euphoric ‘Your English Is Good’ is the icing on the cake for ‘Elephant Shell’. It complements all the songs on the album and always whips the band’s audience into a great frenzy.
‘Elephant Shell’ is a very good album. However, maybe Tokyo Police Club have concentrated on the saying “quality not quantity” too much. It clocks in at just less than 28 minutes. This is such a great shame. The familiarity of Tokyo Police Club makes ‘Elephant Shell’ not seem like their debut album. It is an extremely well-rounded album which generally shows Tokyo Police Club as a band to watch out for. They may be popular now, but give a few years and they will be massive.
