Errors are one of those bands that break the barriers of genre confinement, making it particularly hard to review. We'll give it a shot anyway. Imagine a slightly more listener friendly and accessible Battles, with a touch of 65DaysOfStatic's electronic beats and urgent-to-melodic-loud-to-quiet structures, and you're nearly on track to describing debut album 'It's Not Something, But It Is Like Whatever'. Nearly.
Impressively, the band can leap from track to track and create an entirely different sound in each - from the infectious electro synth sound of last year's single 'Salut! France' to guitar based 'Still Game', Errors have shown their full potential and immense talent. If house-influenced songs such as Pump aren't being played in every hip indie nightclub by the end of the year, then a large number of DJs have gone horribly wrong.
The reality is, Errors can be compared to a huge variety of bands but thankfully still have their own unique feel. Hailing from Glasgow, home to fellow post-rockers Mogwai it seems that the market for instrumental music this side of the Atlantic might be gaining popularity much quicker than ever before - which is unsurprising with bands like Errors emerging.
Admittedly, comparing this album to Battles' 'Mirrored' is the same sort of slightly lazy name-dropping that came with numerous reviews comparing British Sea Power to The Arcade Fire - of course there are similarities, but there are also many, many differences. First off, and probably most importantly, this album is actually easier to listen to, but still musically very clever.
In the first half of 2008, we've had some impressive releases - but we're confident this will still be topping our end of year lists. Contrary to what they might say, this album really is quite something. Original, intelligent, almost flawless. Call it pretentious all you will, but 'It's Not Something...' is a brilliant work of music.
