The latest band to join the hoards of eighties revivalists, London film-school lovelies Semifinalists have swapped the psychedelic shoegaze of their previous effort for sparkling synth-pop. Ever the experimentalists, opener ‘Our Body’ sees Ferry Gouw and co. coming over all lo-fi before unleashing a Smashing Pumpkins style freakout. ‘Odd Situation’ is the sound of Hot Chip slow dancing with the Pet Shop Boys, whilst ‘x Song’ sees Adriana Alba grabbing the mic for a return to their former Cocteau Twins meets Flaming Lips sublime whimsy. Occasionally ‘2’ delves into parts of the era of bubble perms and shoulder pads that are probably best forgotten, with ‘Last Pretending’s cringe-inducing synth stabs, but when it’s in the name of experimentalism, who cares?. Flying the flag for weirdos everywhere, Semifinalists are blissfully explorative, and the result is ace. ‘Makeout Club’ manages to simultaneously sound like the soundtrack to a low budget sci-fi series and be a swoon inducing love song. As gloriously mind boggling as ever.
