Rating: 8/10
Opening track and recent single, 'Nerves' is a very sinister track. With singer Tim Sketchley's frantic vocals and syncopated guitars, a feeling of confusion is conveyed. Maths Class are often compared to Foals, and the similarities are very clear indeed. Despite swirling guitars and synths, 'Deutsche' is a much more melodic song. It shows how varied Maths Class can be with their song writing. The continuous time signature changes in 'Jonny Got The Jawline' gives this song a dramatic and musical edge. With memorable and catchy vocals, 'Jonny Got The Jawline' stands out in this EP and is worth more than being just the B-Side to 'Nerves', released on the same day as this EP.
The atonality of the opening vocals in 'Branches' contrasts remarkably with the chorus, which is a brilliant development and moment of togetherness of the band. 'Branches' is a great pop song and shows again the ability of Maths Class to change style if and as they want. 'Replays Of Relays' is a great song. The use of oscillators on Piers Cowburn's microKORG synthesizer gives this an addictive sense as Maths Class rush their way through another frenetic indie-disco song.
Maths Class are a fantastic new band. Their rapid and vigourous songs are special. They are definitely ones to watch for in the future.
