CSS showed with their self-titled debut album that they had enough talent to change style and direction easily. With opening track ‘Jager Yoga’, CSS have used a stripped-back approach, showing a minimalist side to the band. If The Ting Tings had an ounce of musicality, this would be how they would sound. ‘Rat Is Dead (Rage)’ was originally given away as a free download, but this is one of the best songs on the album. It incorporates a punk side of CSS into a song with soaring guitars and instantly catchy vocals. CSS are unpredictable, but they still know how to write songs. ‘Let’s Reggae All Night’ is a very funky, synth-driven track. However, the chorus does not develop the song well and ‘Let’s Reggae All Night’ winds down into a disappointing track. ‘Give Up’ reverts back to the tried-and-tested guitar led songs. It is a great improvement from ‘Let’s Reggae All Night’. It is a brilliant song, combining a chorus to die for with contrasting, yet interesting motifs. With a chorus which develops constantly throughout the song, ‘Left Behind’ builds up into a classic CSS song. ‘Beautiful Song’ is certainly not beautiful and not particularly musical, but it is a great display of singer Lovefoxxx’s fantastic leadership of the band. She has grabbed this song by its hand and taken it in continually different directions throughout the song.
With violent synths and guitars interweaving giving the song a raw edge to it, ‘How I Became Paranoid’ shows CSS’ passion and vigour at their greatest. This is contrasted immensely by ‘Move’, which can easily become a dance floor classic in years to come. ‘I Fly’ reverts back to the guitars and angry vocals that CSS have used to such a great benefit. ‘I Fly’ is a nice song, but the simplicity of the lyrics is slightly disappointing. ‘Believe Achieve’ has an almost sinister feel to it, with ice cool vocals and evasive synth melodies. Album closer ‘Air Painter’ is has a very jubilant side to it, due to its brilliant backing vocals. This will, without a doubt, rapidly become a live favourite.
On the whole, this is a very interesting and well-rounded album. CSS have returned. They are here to stay now. That is for sure.

Just wanted to say I found a free download of 'Rat is Dead' off CSS's new Album 'Donkey' - Its also MP3 which is Sweet! I believe the company, 7Digital are also offering the album for a fiver…which is cool :-)
