Cansei De Ser Sexy/The 1990s - Sheffield Leadmill

The 1990s are, by reputation, ‘meant to be really good’, because Rough Trade signed them after their second gig, because they’re cohorts of fellow Glaswegians Franz Ferdinand and because… well, everybody says they’re ‘meant to be really good’. They swagger and pull a few macho-indie poses - recently supporting label-mates The Long Blondes obviously hasn’t dandified them. A few whimsical neck scarves could have helped, for although foot-stomping single 'You’re Supposed To Be My Friend' is warmly received, overall the three-piece are simply another unremarkable guitar band.
Style magazine darlings Cansei de Ser Sexy burst on stage to their cheeky chant of "C! S! S! Suxx!". They may be an enticing prospect, but hype hasn’t spread much further than over-exposed fashion photoshoots as the Leadmill tonight is half-full, with only a small crowd of fans at the front. On their eponymous debut album CSS sound like a Casio disco all-nighter, while the live set-up focuses more on guitars.
These former art students may look fabulous ("five Brazilian chicks! In one band!" enthuses a male fan at the bar), but any performance is restricted by their limited musicianship. Although Adriano Cintra holds everything together with a sturdy discopunk beat, it's half-Brazilian, half-Japanese frontwoman Lovefoxx who makes Cansei de Ser Sexy. Whirling and thrashing to the beat, she still manages to easily deliver her breathy, child-like vocals.
The chirpy seduction of breakthrough single 'Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death From Above' provides an exhilarating ending, with the band gleefully descending into cliché-d rock ‘n roll chaos, scattering instruments and snare drum fills, with keyboardist Luiza Sa atop the drum kit battering a cymbal. Lovefoxx struggles to find the English to explain: "I have those… sweat circles," she laughs. But after such exuberance, everybody looks a bit damp around the armpits.
