The former Million Dead frontman has spent the last year performing gigs as a solo artist with just his guitar accompanying him on his travels up and down the country. This time though, he’s back on the road with a backing band in the form of fellow musicians (and friends) Dive Dive (minus Jamie - their vocalist and session keyboardist for tonight’s set).
In a room buzzing with excitement, the audience crammed together shoulder-to-shoulder, eagerly anticipating the presence of the underground man of the moment – Frank Turner. His arrival on stage was greeted with a vast cheer, and so began an evening of punkified folk – angry, discontent, poetic, yet humour-filled.
This isn't comparative to the likes of Damien Rice or James Blunt. This is music filled with angst, passion, and most important of all, lyrical content that people can actually relate to. Turner beats down any misconceptions of folk music being for old fuddy-duddies; far from it – he shows that folk music can, and herein witnessed tonight, be cool.
Promoting and playing songs from his recent debut album ‘Sleep Is For The Week’ and last years’ E.P. ‘Campfire Punkrock’, Turner looks extremely confident and comfortable on the small stage in front of a close crowd, and produces great rapport and interaction with the audience from beginning to end. Highlights include the audience singing ‘Thatcher Fucked The Kids’ right back to Turner; solo version of ‘A Decent Cup Of Tea’; the evil ex-girlfriend song ‘Worse Things Happen At Sea’ and recent single ‘Vital Signs’. But nonetheless, each song Turner performs is a pure gem in itself.
He's undeniably a great performer with huge charisma and appears completely at ease on stage. Showing that acoustic based folk is transitional, bringing it to the masses with rock and punk edges, this more intimate arena illustrates Turner at his finest.
