10 for 2010: Bird Names

Bird Names

We're not sure how many 'end of year lists Bird Names' 'Sings the Browns' appears in but we'll take a wild stab and say "Not bloody enough".

The Chicago six piece are everything we love about the brighter bits of the 'underground' and their fifth official LP is no exception. Often written off by deriders of free-form writing as messy and 'just plain noise' their records are whimsical journeys that anyone [yes ANYONE] can enjoy. Bright choral jangling sits alongside layered chanting and it's as if they're really smiling at each other while killing that cymbal. Thy transform the passion onto stage far too easily so it's no surprise that they're staples on the U.S touring circuit; having previously released records with Unsound and Wham City.

As sun seeps through the leaves, or frost crunches under foot, Bird Names are a perfect walk in a park where Captain Beefheart and band just happen to be taking a stroll. Roll on next year's ramble...
