10 for 2010: Dum Dum Girls

Dum Dum Girls deserve to have a great 2010. Dee Dee Dum Dum came to our attention in early 2009 with her warped pop songs 'Catholicked' and fantastically grubby EP on Zoo. Justified fawning praise followed and after a bit of speculation she was signed to Sub Pop, marking a shift in the kind of artists they were known for picking up. Live Shows backed by members of Crystal Stilts and Crocodiles followed and 'I Will Be' was revealed as her first full length release.
It didn't always look so promising. Somewhere in the storm she fell victim to over saturation; and we're not just talking about the sounds. Having released an EP on Mike Sniper's admirable 'sign-everyone' label Captured Tracks she was lumped in [by some] as being just 'yet another garage-revivalist who didn't warrant more than a miserable comment about her choice of dress. Before long somebody decided that lo-fi was "back", hyped it up- and in a messy meta-reference - started to write the whole thing off.
So why Dee Dee? If artists are being made to develop in front of our eyes, from X Factor to GBV, we can feel proud when we see her polished live shows and increasingly clear sound. Forget the miserable fuckers who say she can't tour; she's booked for the US, UK and Europe next year and early listens of the album show more than a spark of something special. Pop songs, forever.
