10 for 2010: Joy Orbison

This year 'BBC Sound of 2010's' surprise inclusion Joy Orbison found his support in the kind of blogger that didn't exist even 2 years ago. Elbowing their way into the market - alongside Pitchfork and Gorilla Vs Bear came No Pain in Pop and 20jazzfunkgreats [and more recently Transparent - the label / blog combo formed by 2 former Rakes fan-boys late last year]. They champion music that's not solely for the dancefloor or the morning after. These are dudes that observe poetically rather than passing cynical judgement over what they're hearing.
And what better representative than Peter O'Grady? This year's standout 'Hyph Mngo' begins as a blissed out lazy-boy anthem. Half finished cigarettes smoking gently on top of an old skool stereo [well, he's been DJing since 13] before morphing into languid dub beats cut and paste with washes of vocals. Ask former drum 'n jazz staples London Elektricity and High Contrast how it feels to straddle the night and the dawn, dub and jazzy pop...
Those clipped and looped vocals finish the tracks off and keep us waiting for something more. They leave us kind of unfulfilled. They keeps us waiting for an explosion. They keep us waiting for 2010.
