King of Bubu: Janka Nabay

One of Sierra Leone's biggest stars has a new EP. Ten years in the making, 'King of Bubu' tells the story of Janka Nabay, the man who went electric with the country's tradional folk sounds. His tapes soon found fame with city youth, being swapped in the streets and shared among friends. Used by his enemies to lure people out of hiding he became a symbol of the conflict in the mid 90s but still continued to write songs about peace, women's liberation and moving into the future while staying in touch with their country's past. Sadly, Nabay was forced to leave his home in Freetown after becoming a target. On his last night he snuck into a recording studio and these are what we're left with now. His first release outside Sierra Leone is a collection of up-tempo beats alongside traditional hill melodies. It ties together his past and his future, showing more of the world what Bubu is capable of.
Janka Nabay will play a record release show 3/5/10 at Monster Island Basement in Brooklyn. The EP 'King of Bubu' will be released on March 9th 20010. Buy by clicking here,
