Record Shopping: Surfer Blood

They started touring early this year and have barely stopped since so Palm Beach boys Surfer Blood must have plenty of time to listen to records. But while you might expect the check shirted ones to be getting down to Pavement and anything Rivers Cuomo, they're actually crusting to Fugazi, calming down with Can and um, discovering Birmingham circa 1970.

Fugazi - Repeater

JP: In highschool, probably even earlier on, I had a lot of friends who were older than me. They were punk kids and introduced me to Rites of Spring and Minor Threat. Those were some of my first favourite bands. I became kind of a crusty myself! I was probably thirteen or fourteen years old. It's funny because that's when I met Tyler and thought ,ew, he was a pop punk kid. This was the first Fugazi record I ever heard and it's probably my favourite early record of theirs. I think The Argument is probably their masterpiece but this is great, front to back.

Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam

JP: Animal Collective always have really creative art and music ideas. I became an Animal Collective fan in 2006 when my sister introduced them to me. I've been following them avidly ever since.

Neu: What about the solo projects? Panda Bear? Avey Tare?

JP: Person Pitch is a great record. If they'd had that I probably would have picked that... I think this is my favourite band record because this is when they started getting more electronic and more poppy. I think my mom would probably like them.

Tigermilk - Belle and Sebastian

JP: I've owned this twice now, once on CD and once on vinyl but both times it's been damaged. I was in a band in highschool and the drummer knew so much about music. He recommended this band to me and I fell in love. Stuart Murdoch is one of the best lyricists ever and I like everything they've ever done. Even The Life Pursuit.

Neu: I went to see them in Liverpool once and we stayed at a hotel that was basically a brothel.

Thomas: But they're such a bookish band!

Neu: They weren't in the brothel!

JP: I hear Stuart likes to party though...

Swell Maps - Jane From Occupied Europe

Thomas: This more of an experiment than a record. It's amazing and all over the place. I think they manage to pull it off though. I heard it about 2 years ago when I was on a big experimental kick and pretty much just listened to it straight for a month. I'm pretty sure that everything you hear on the record is a real instrument, there's no electronics and I think that is pretty cool. There's a load of guitar pedals and it is SUPER GOOD. I haven't seen this on vinyl at all. I'm pretty excited to see it actually...

Women - Public Strain

Thomas: I was a huge fan of the self titled and I love this too. They write pop songs that shouldn't be pop songs, I don't know how else to describe it! I saw them just recently in Toronto. I'm also really jealous of their artwork. It's really tasteful.

Neu: Not that you're judging records by their covers...

Can - Future Days

image

Thomas: Also one of my favourite records. It's got me through so many turbulent flights. Side two is like a 20 minute jam. It kind of mellows me out and it is super good. I can't believe it is from '73. On Youtube there are some live videos that are really amazing.

Neu: I like the idea of people discovering Can on Youtube.

Thomas: It's silly but it's true. I recommend it to Nervous Flyers and everyone else.
