Saturday’s No Good: Jonathan Haskell’s new sounds

Seven Saturdays

Those 'dudes' in Vampire Weekend recently came under fire from Gawker [and a few other eagle eyed people] as having sold their new album on the premise that they've moved from the Ivy League to the Golden State. Every press bit, interview and 'sound bite' discusses how the band's new album is Californian through and through.

But what if your album doesn't have a clear location? What if you didn't pick up some bermudas and decide that the beach is totally rad? Are you stuffed in the age of 'Rockonomics?'

Not so for Seven Saturdays, an LA band whose sunshine was stolen.

Making instrument heavy orchestral stuff Jonathan D. Haskell found his inspiration walking down Scottish streets and thinking about how he maybe didn't want to go home. Eventually he did and with renewed enthusiasm made a new EP, out on the 12th January in the US. "There is no escaping LA" he says. "If you're born here, even if you move away, its impact is always brewing just below the surface."

The record follows on from Haskell's previous work as FIRS and features contributions from members of M83, St Vincent and Verbena.
