Small Black

Small Black head out on the road with Washed Out and Pictureplane in March and April. If Travis alters minds and Ernest brings the laid back body, Josh Kolenik and Ryan Heynerband are the tender soul.
When the world is rushing past all to quick and you wish you'd get some teen-dram slow mo, take a breath with the misleadingly expansive sound of Small Black. Josh and Ryan have been parading themselves around NYC after forming in an uncle's attic last summer, creating limited run records overflowing with glitchy love songs.
And it isn't just the name that's keeping it understated yet huge. At the centre of the Small Black sound is the humble Casio Keyboard, a staple in making small time bedroom music since the Casiotone popped out in 1980. Beefed up with polyrhythms and loops they are another of the acts showing that grand feelings don't need to come wrapped in major-label production. The minimal live set up - previously just the two main men - has just expanded to include two new members and they played a whopping number of CMJ Music Conference dates in their hometown last year. Releasing on Transparent, Leftist Nautical Antiques, Mexican Summer and Lovepump Utd, Small Black are set for stateswide and worldwide things in 2010. Walk away from that mini drama and listen to some.
