Listening Party: Tanlines

Today's 'Listening Party' is brought to you in association with Vitamin C and a hangover.
Tanlines release the Settings EP on March 9th through True Panther Sounds. The record packs influences in with wild abandon, switching between Tropicalia inspired and dirty 80s dance pop, club bangers and whirring chill out sounds. They've opened for Yeasayer, Os Mutantes and HEALTH and partied with Kitsune and Young Turks but can producer Eric and his mate Jesse from Professor Murder make this grey day a little more fruity?

Reinfo
SR: This is exciting. It starts real slow. That's a classic dance technique. I'm just waiting for it to break.
EJ: Do you think they are just using a casio? I think I had a keyboard that could make a steel drum sound.
SR:It's a nice opener. I think I'd like somebody to do an interpretative dance to it. Only wearing a grass skirt.
Real Life
SR: This sounds like one of the album's pop bangers. I can hear why the Telepathe remix took off...
EJ: Yeah, they've got a good ear for this kind of thing. Really bridging the gap between being 'just a DJ' or 'just a band'. They definitely don't fit in with a lot of the ambient bedroom producer stuff that we're hearing. Way too much fun.
SR: There are vocals! It's quite LCD... I think James Murphy would have loved to come up with something like this for the new album.
EJ: Too bad Tanlines did first. "It was a past life thing!" This is catchy. I'd like this to be an 'anthem of the summer'. Can we have an anthem of the summer in January?
SR:The record isn't released until March.
EJ. It still won't be summer then.
Three Trees
EJ: This one sounds a bit like an interlude... Not into it so much.
SR: It'll probably change in a minute. There it goes.
EJ: Na. It's rubbish computer game music.
SR: Makes me want to shake it still. I think it's what fancy people call "polyrhythmic"
EJ:Not a nice image...
Policy of Trust
SR: I'd definitely shake it to this. Real party music. Drinking cocktail from a pineapple and checking out dudes in short shorts.
EJ: Do you like short shorts?
SR: I think I'd like Tanlines in short shorts. Should I make a joke out of that? Wanting to see their Tanlines. Too cheap?
EJ: Pervert.
SR:It's a good track. I can imagine this getting played on the radio a lot like Life Magazine did on the last Cold Cave record.
Bees
SR: Runs into Bees nicely. I didn't expect the vocals to be so good or so high in the mix. I thought it might be a bit more roboticized.
EJ: I was expecting a slower track here. I like really insistent layered vocals. They work perfectly.
SR: It doesn't get too much for you?
EJ: If I was dancing I'd be out of breath by now. Surely that's a good thing?
Z
SR: And so Z is our comedown?
EJ: Nope you're wrong. Straight back up. I think they've made one of my favourite party albums of the year.
SR: I could relax to this one though. I'd DJ it too, though.
EJ: Glasser is good at that. She brings a softness to it. I would kill to be able to do harmonies like she can.
SR:Tanlines are lucky to have that vocal. I think this is my favourite of the EP. It has everything.
The Verdict
SR: This is why people should still buy records. It works as a whole and is varied enough that you could let it play at a party and people would just think it is a great DJ set.
EJ: Let the steel drum play on into 2010. Plus it's got Glasser.
