The Magic Lantern

The more of this stripped-back folk I hear (see The Mariner's Children and Tristram), the more I'm convinced that the cardigan wearers making it are braver than they're given credit for. Sure, they may spend afternoons sitting cuddled in a collective listening to songs that feature mandolins but, bleedin' eck, those vocals. More daring than any stagediver, on 'Cut from Stone' Jamie Doe's short bursts of folky-notes power through an impressive mesh of clinking, groaning strings and deft pretty plucking. Slowly joined by more and more sound - everything from a crack to whistle - it bursts into life towards the end, the stone finally breaking down to reveal what the band are all about. They're making bold, heartwrenching (and still bloody clever) songs.

The Magic Lantern launch their single at Cafe Oto in London on November 24th. The single is out 6th December on Believe Digital Records.
