These New Puritans: Back To Church

Welcome back into to the Church of These New Puritans. Since 'Beat Pyramid' confused audiences with its mixed gospels in 2008 the band has been away on pilgrimage with Crystal Castles, The Kills and Klaxons, playing their Steve Reich meets dancehall sound to the confused masses. On their trek they discovered 'Hidden' the band's second LP due out on January 18th 2010.
While the first record sounded alien to just about everything; sitting diverse genres, styles and atmospheres side by side like nobody else [nobody anywhere near the pop charts at least] 'Hidden' finds itself with a bit more company. Their delicate take on noise music has been skulking into the sound of bands that started to make names for themselves in the second half of this year. From Factory Floor to Denver wildchild Pictureplane more artists are sticking electronic tentacles on to primal beats.
It makes 'Hidden' sound more assured, like it knows that there are increasing numbers of industro-goth stars there to back them up. Drumbeats snap fearlessly, backing vocals have added drama and choirs get hijacked and made to dance crunk. They whisper about science like hell beasts on 'We Want War' before the orchestral horns cut in. They've even thrown in a looped angel-refrain. 'Drum Courts - Where Corals Lie' goes fucked up nursery rhyme with it's repetitive lyrics and bleeps. It's already got fans claiming it's what the 21st century should sound like and while some acts might be afraid to so brazenly mix the two styles These New Puritans can't get any more stick than last time, can they?
The record is one long score; a thrilling service from start to finish. If it was this exciting, we'd go to Church more often.
