Treet U Beta: Brown Brogues

Brown Brogues

Brown Brogues (the shoe) have undergone a transformation in the past few years. From the preserve of Grandad (or boys with ukuleles who go out with girls look like grannies anyway) they've infiltrated the fashion mainstream. With every new vintage shop came more of the the sartorially forward graphic designers and professional man bag carriers. Then Alexa Chung wore them, Agnes Deyn wore them, even Kerry Katona probably tried to shove her feet into a pair. Now everyone has some, particularly boys who you think are cool but actually like things like misogyny.

Can we hope for such a rise to fame for Brown Brogues (band)? Probably not but that shouldn't stop you listening. The two piece - from Manchester, one big, one small - make music that always exists regardless of the current trends or celebrity endorsement. Thrusting pop songs more commonly made by bands approximately double their size, they mix ragey guitar with the fuzzy snarls that keep Mark E Smith in Holsten Pils and - while it might not be the Heat magazine faithful- should find them friends like Nottingham weirdies Prize Pets and half of Hackney.
