HoZac

HoZac records formed in 2006 after the demise of Horizontal Action Magazine. Rather than telling people what's cool in print, they've uncovered the best garage scuzz by getting out there and releasing the wax. Blank Dogs, Smith Westerns, Jacuzzi Boys, Nobunny, Dum Dum Girls, Box Elders, Mess Folk, Fungi Girls and loads of other bands we love have released 7" and LPs with them in the last four years and it doesn't sound as if they'll stop any time soon. We challenged one half of HoZac, Todd Novak, to answer our quickfire questions.

I got into releasing records because....
We just had been helping out so many other labels over the years, it was about time!

I believe that...
Records are forever and that we're into making timeless music for future generations to enjoy.

I hate that...
Sometimes the best stuff we find to release gets picked up by another label before we can respond to the email, sometimes even within the same day.

I love that...
People think we're such a huge record label, it's astonishingly inaccurate but such a nice gesture.

I would never release a record by a band if...
There were too many bearded band members, that gets pretty nauseating. But there's always gonna be a few exceptions of course.

But I'll always want to release a band's record if...
We can't get the songs out of our heads.

The easiest decision I've had to make is...
To start the HoZac Hookup Klub, our subscription-only 7" series, that has been one of our long-planned projects and watching it help these amazing bands take off.

I hope that...
Great bands continue to find their way into our soiled arms and waxy ears.

The new stuff that I love is...
Really varying in degrees of similarity, like Super Wild Horses, Women In Prison, People's Temple, and Sleepovers.

The old stuff that I love is...
Badly executed glam, inept punk slobber, retarded psych, pessimistic folk, and pernicious pop.

When I'm not fiddling about with records I like to...
Watch horribly funny/ghastly/psychedelic films from the 60s-80s, cook and ride bikes down to the lake.

I'm excited about...
Everything we've got coming out, record-wise, and the ability to bring those recordings to life. The albums we've got in the works with Eric & the Happy Thoughts, Idle Times, and Subtle Turnhips are incredible each in their own ways and should flip wigs across the globe, most definitely!

HoZac also run the pretty damn excellent Victim of Time.
