The Young and Lost Club

Young and Lost Club

To us boarding school seems like a place for cold showers, miserable matrons and something called 'prep'. It's Enid Blyton or boy wizards.

Not so for Nadia Dahlawi and Sara Jade, otherwise known as The Young and Lost Club. After becoming bored of their studies aged fifteen they clubbed together to make the Pyrrha fanzine; escaping out of dorms to go to gigs and sneaking into staff rooms to put it together. "From there we went on to clubnights" they explain "until we reached twenty and decided a singles label was the natural progression". The label has released 7" singles by bands including Cheatahs, Lunar Youth and Swanton Bombs and LPs by Noah and The While. That's at the same time as keeping on top of a free download singles club featuring
all their artists. How do they manage it to juggle so many things? It must get pretty cramped in their club-house. "Nadia is very organised..." laughs Sara.

Organised or not, they still like to party. While it might be a 'natural progression' for them to release records, the pair and the office cat still run their Young and Lost Club nights and are celebrating Othello Woolf's 'Stand' at The Legion in London this Thursday. Their club night is one of their favourite things about their club, allowing them to test new bands on stage and promote what they're doing. In the last few years they've had Jamie T play one of his first shows, put on Adele and Jack Penate and had heard The XX before any of the hype. Isn't a bit annoying to lose big acts? "We understand that it [bands going on elsewhere] has to happen, we're always happy to see our bands succeed".

What do you have coming up?
In January we have debut singles out from Othello Woolf and Sunderbans, followed by new singles from
Planet Earth and Oh Minnows, plus new recordings from Noah and the Whale.

What other labels inspire you and why?
We always respected Rough Trade growing up, and continue to do so, they release the records they want to and still manage to stay ahead of everyone.

Got Your Eyes on Anyone?
We're planning to do a single with a new band called Gypsy and the Cat, and we love the new band Egyptian Hip Hop too.
