Don’t Make Lists

By day he's Nestor Watach, student and music geek, by night he's Don't Make Lists. On the 1st of this year Nestor started a blog to count down his favourite songs of the last decade on. We've been lucky enough to host a bunch of his best bits and now he's made us an exclusive mix. It features a bit of everything, from Twin Peaks style romance to hypnotic Krautrock and lo-fi dance.

1 - 00:00 - Jules Chaz - Blak Lodge

Lost count of the lame guitar bands you come across that list "twin peaks" as an influence and then play the same generic 4 minute songs devoid of any of the character or atmosphere that made the tv show special. So it's nice to come across a track alongside Mount Eerie's Between Two Mysteries that take Badalementi's incredible soundtrack to new and exciting places.

2 - 02:48 - Jeans Wilder - Sparkler

Love Jeans Wilder - Antiques being one of my favourite records of recent times. This is a bit of a departure from that but thought it would perfectly fit in with the Twin Peaks theme so far, as it really reminds me of some of the 50's-inspired romantic tracks that appear on the soundtrack.

3 - 05:33 - Step Cousins - Dances With Wolves

Discovered this on an incredible Aeroplanes & Aeroplanes mix, alongside less song-based/hypnagogic stuff like Julian Lynch, Sun Araw and Forest Swords. Thought this is a pretty fun pop song though. Will probably become a "staple" of any dj sets i ever do.

4 - 07:28 - Felt Drawings - What We Share

Found this out through some mixes Freddy from Former Ghosts put out - it's got a similar synthpop vibe to Former Ghosts but probably less accessible and more fucked-up, probably more reminiscent of Freddy's last project, This Song Is A Mess But So Am I

5 - 10:13 - Danger Beach - Apache

Hey, a band with Beach in their name who do lo-fi hazey songs that suit summer days, whatever next? I suppose you know exactly what to expect but still really well crafted and stands above most of their contemporaries.

6 - 12:32 - R. Stevie Moore - I've Begun To Fall In Love

Probably the best "outsider" artist i can think of; for fans of Daniel Johnston, Jed Fair or even the solo demoey stuff of Rivers Cuomo. But also heavily associated with newer weirdo stuff like the Ariel Pink/John Maus/ETC "scene". Such a gem.

7 - 14:40 - Liar - Oriental Lady

Taken from a killer early 80s compilation of british synth music called Synthetic Romance (long out of print, so do a quick google for a guilt-free d/l) - every track being every bit as good as this one

8 - 18:37 - Dylan Ettinger - Baptism

Psychy hypnagogic jams for fans of Sun Araw, Skaters, etc.

9 - 23:05 - Taragana Pyjarama - Girls

Best known for work under the name Eim Ick, this is danish musician Nick Erikson's new project and I think this is the best track he's worked one. One loop, really gorgeous.

10 - 29:14 - Car Crash Set - Fall From Grace

Think I know this from a guest-post somewhere I read by one of the members of SleepāˆžOver and his since become possibly one of my favourite tracks ever - totally perfect new wave. Ridiculous how much incredible that New Zealand has been responsible for over the years.

11 - 35:56 - Ashra - Sunrain

Thought it'd be a good idea to put this at the end. Really beautiful and hypnotic krautrock that came out about 35 years ago. Sometimes it seems like bands I totally love like Emeralds are only just catching up now. So ahead of it's time it's frightening.
