Hunx & co say ¡hola! to Matador

Matador have confirmed their purchase of True Panther Sounds. Writing on their Matablog, the NYC//London label draw comparison to to Victor Kiam buying Remington. They say 'Victor Kiam once explained his decision to purchase the Remington Shaver co, 'I liked it so much, I bought the company.' Needless to say, we like Dean, Girls, Glasser, Tanlines, Lemonade and Hunx & His Punx much more than than Mr. Kiam appreciated those razor blades'. The decision comes a year that saw Girls become a surprise hit with 'Album' [perhaps thanks in part to the bigger label's involvement] and filth-pop svengali's Hunx and his Punx continue to make "having fun" appealing to even total bores.
Matador was started in Chris Lombardi's apartment in 1989. Matching up with the former manager of Homestead Records Gerad Cosloy it has been a two man operation - give or take its staff in New York and London - since the same year. It was about as homebased as you get, and made it big because it WAS GOOD. Loads of business dealings later [including partnerships with Atlantic and Capitol] the label is back under the ownership of Chris, Gerard and Beggars Group. They took the great decision to expand its roster and sign the likes of Times New Viking, Kurt Vile and Cold Cave.
True Panther Sounds releases gold pop hits under the control of Dean Bein [who kinda worked at Matador anyway]. He has always prided himself on matching up with other labels to get records out to the widest audience possible. They've previously worked with Mt. st.Mtn.Oozono Kidss , Shinkoyo and Turnstile and released bands like Cameron Mesirow's Glasser and The Standing Nudes. Molly and Dean rule. They paid for it themselves and even took on other records for distro.
The verdict?
They're basically giving Matador a sparkly beard and getting the sounds of Hunx, Ty Segall and The Fly Girlz to more listeners. Awesome.
Nothing has been announced re. any thing changing with Turnstile Records [Girls' home in the UK] or any of its UK Distro.
